Neuropathy in Tyrolean Grey cattle and other alpine grey cattle populations is inherited as a monogenic autosomal recessive trait. Affected calves are characterized by neurological deficits starting at a few weeks of age. The first visible symptom is an impaired coordination during movement. Later the animals start to fall and finally they are unable to stand at all. We identified the causative mutation and developed a genetic test, which allows the unequivocal detection of carriers.
