We investigate molecular genetic mechanisms, which lead to the belt and other depigmentation phenotypes in cattle. Depigmentation is caused by the absence of melanocytes and leads to white patches in the skin and coat. The belt is known to occur in Brown Swiss, Lakenvelder ("Dutch Belted"), and Belted Galloway cattle.
