Hairlessness or Naked Foal Syndrome (NFS) is a monogenic autosomal recessive trait in the Akhal-Teke breed. Reports on affected foals date back to 1938. Together with the National Stud in Avenches and international collaboration partners we identified the causative genetic defect for this trait. Genetic testing is now offered by the Veterinary Genetics Laboratory at the University of California in Davis (UC Davis).
