Analysis of Genetic Disorders and other Hereditary Traits in South American Camelids

The increasing popularity of llamas and alpacas outside of South America is undisputed. However, the associated limited genetic diversity raises questions about health and other genetically determined characteristics such as coat color. For this reason, a survey was carried out in Switzerland, Germany, and Austria in 2019 to determine the prevalence of congenital disorders and breeding-relevant characteristics such as coat color and fleece type in South American camelids. In addition, information about the purpose of these animals, the herd size, and the breeds was collected.
